Opened in 1901 at a build cost of a princely £17,000 – over £2,000,000 at today’s rates – Cromer Pier has managed to survive two world wars, numerous recessions and some truly atrocious weather. This is mainly due to the determination of North Norfolk District Council, who realised long ago, that the pier was not just a ‘local’ attraction but, with its theatre and other attractions, was a genuine draw for holiday makers and day-trippers. Consequently, a sufficient maintenance budget has always been made available in order to keep the pier in good working order.

The 2012 storm surge though was one of those events which could easily have closed the pier for good. In fact, the pier was closed for just a few days because the team that had just completed an extensive maintenance project were still on site and were able to make the necessary repairs – great news for the families who had booked seats in the theatre for the Christmas Pantomime.

UK Industrial Services now has the contract for the latest round of maintenance and many of the team who worked so hard to get the pier reopened in 2012, are involved in this latest project.

The latest project will see the replacement of almost 300 square metres of decking, 92 deck beams,126 bracings, a 15metre lattice beam and various other bracings. Naturally, as we approach the summer months, it is vital that the pier always remains open to the public, so the schedule involves closing first the left-hand section of the neck for decking and beam replacement. Once the left side has been completed, work can start on the right-hand section. Good weather conditions mean that the project is on schedule to be completed in June.
